Realistic Fiction

Image
Realistic Fiction is a genre of storytelling in which it can depict the story and characters could theoretically happen in the real world with a believable setting and situation that can resemble everyday life. These kind of books are made to be relatable towards the people that read them as well as the things that could be made up in the books are in real life or based in real life to make the kid imagine this actually happening. My opinion and reflection on this genre is that to me being able read a story that is something that could be theoretically in real life and being able to possibly relate to it is defiantly a story that I would read and be able to imagine in real life. Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a novel about a boy named August Pullman who starts middle school for the first time. Auggie has a facial difference that makes him stand out, and the book explores themes of kindness, acceptance, and empathy. Other Realistic Fiction Books: Fish in a Tree/New Kid

Historical Fiction

Historical Fiction is basically real historical events used in a fictional setting for its story at the time. Lets say that the story is set in a time that we are very fond of and it could really be anything in history so lets say Gladiator, the story and setting take place years and years ago in the past but the actual movie most likely did not happen in the past, it was just made up in that time period to show what could've happen in that time. To me when it comes to my thoughts on this genre, I feel that it is good to have books or even movies like this genre because when it comes to the past we only know what is taught to us or what we learn on our own. We can have the books and movies based in the past to give us an idea of what exactly could've happened back then. "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" tells the story of Bruno, a young German boy whose father is appointed as the commandant of a concentration camp during World War II, forcing Bruno to move to a de...

Fantasy

Title: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone  Genre: Fantasy Author: J.K. Rowling Age Group: 10-Up Teacher Evaluation: As a teacher any Harry Potter books are very challenging but also can be good to read if you want a really good fantasy book. Not only are there the books but there are also the movies that can help a young reader understand what exactly is happening in the book, being able to have the connection between the book and movie I know always helped me when trying to get a better understanding. I love Harry Potter and have always watched the movies growing up around Christmas time and it was always the best time being able to have that especially with the books being out there is the world as well. Honorable Mentions: The Chronicles of Narnia and The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Traditional Literature

Title: The Ugly Ducklings and Other Fairy Tales Genre: Traditional Literature Author: Hans Christian Andersen  Age Group: 4-6 Teacher Evaluation: For me as a teacher this would help benefit younger kids because fairy tales are always a good way to get the young minds of the children going. Also having other fairy tales and not just one is a good way to keep young children engaged in what your reading to them and also these are fairy tales that have been around for decades so teaching them and reading them to the children now will bring the tradition of these tales staying around for longer. I remember this book when was younger and I enjoyed whenever the teacher would pull it out for us to listen to her read because we liked those stories and hearing stories that have always been around we could hear them for a couple years and know exactly what happens. Honorable Mentions: The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz and Stone Soup

Reflection Favorite Picture Book

My favorite picture book as a child was Don't Let the Pigeon Drive This Bus! By: Mo Willems. I think this was my favorite book when I was a child because just the idea of it I feel it was just funny to let a pigeon drive a bus and it just made me actually imagine the thing actually taking place. This isn't the only book in the series there are also other books that were made that revolve around the pigeon and it always got me intrigued about what the pigeon could be doing the next time around.
